Why Do People Enjoy Gaming?

People, most of the time, believe that we play games only to escape this stressful life. But other factors such as psychological needs also play a vital role. The basic psychological needs can be classified into three main categories, competence, autonomy, and relatedness.

Dr. Scott Rigby of clinical and social psychology from the University of Rochester researched to find the relationship between these basic needs and video games. He found out that our desire to seek out control, feel independent, and be related has a huge role in our habit of playing video games.

While playing video games, we control the narrative, are independent enough to make decisions, and have online friends to feel related to. Furthermore, the study by Dr. Rigby also reveals that games are more efficient in fulfilling basic psychological needs than any other activity.
